Technical Lead
Who We Are
Serving the largest customer ecosystem in regulated energy, HData helps utilities, regulators, advocates, advisory firms, and energy technology companies turn regulatory complexity into strategic advantage. By reducing the time and cost burdens of manual research and analysis, the HData platform enables teams to efficiently monitor regulatory developments, prepare for proceedings, mitigate potential risks, and confidently make decisions that consider comprehensive data.
We are a venture-backed Techstars company with investment from firms including Buoyant Ventures, Hyde Park Venture Partners, Firebrand Ventures, and MassMutual Ventures. We work closely with our customers to understand their pains, and we collaborate across all teams to build and deliver exceptional products.
The Opportunity
We're looking for a Technical Lead to be the engineering counterpart to our Technical Product Manager, jointly owning HData's external API data partnerships and the core platform that powers them. As HData's regulatory data—spanning dockets, FERC filings, and rate cases—matures into a sought-after standalone product, enterprise partners are building their own capabilities on top of our intelligence. This role is the technical anchor for that work: designing the APIs those partners consume, setting the engineering standards that make them trustworthy, and building the internal foundation that scales with demand.
You will work closely with a dedicated Technical PM, with peer Technical Leads, other Software Engineers, Data Engineers, and directly with external technology partners. You'll write code, review architecture, define contracts, and help grow HData into a platform that external developers can build on.
Who You Are
You’ll thrive here if you:
- Take pride in engineering craft: your APIs are clean, well-documented, and a pleasure to integrate with
- Think in systems: you design for extensibility from the start, so each new integration is faster than the last
- Collaborate naturally with peers: you can lead a technical domain without needing to own every decision in it
- Communicate clearly with others about your work: equally able and comfortable writing code and sitting across the table from internal engineers or a partner's engineering team to walk through an integration
- Can hold a technical conversation at multiple altitudes: implementation details with engineers, integration tradeoffs with partners, architectural constraints with leadership
- Thrive in the pace of a growing company: limited resources, high stakes, decisions that matter
What You'll Do
API Design & Data Productization (primary ownership)
- Lead the design of HData's external API surface: entity taxonomy, identifier standards, payload structure, versioning strategy, and provenance metadata—in close collaboration with peer Technical Leads who own adjacent data domains
- Write and maintain developer-facing API documentation: integration guides, reference implementations.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact: for internal engineers and external technology partners through design, implementation, and ongoing iteration
- Define API contracts: work with other Technical Leads and Engineers to ensure that external-facing guarantees are grounded in what internal systems can reliably deliver, including data freshness SLAs and provenance standards
Platform Foundation & Backend Engineering practices (shared ownership)
- Help architect and build the backend services and query infrastructure that power both the core HData product and every application built on top of it
- Partner with Data Engineers and peer Technical Leads to deeply understand existing data pipelines—their structure, freshness characteristics, and limitations—and contribute to their growth where the API surface requires it
- Establish and document engineering patterns—service boundaries, data modeling conventions, search and retrieval architecture—so that each successive application ships faster than the last
- Drive performance, reliability, and observability across the API and query layer
Developer Experience & Relations (growth opportunity)
In your first 90–180 days, you'll be focused squarely on building and shipping a production API integration with initial customer partners. As that foundation matures, this role is expected to grow into broader developer-facing responsibilities:
- Champion the internal developer experience: tooling, shared libraries, and contribution patterns that make it easy for HData's own engineers to build on the platform
- Build feedback loops with partner engineering teams and contribute to technical community presence as HData's partner network expands
- Over time, grow into an external developer relations function: hold partner office hours, build integration playbooks, and grow ecosystem engagement as the scale of the API business warrants it
What You Bring
- Strong backend (8+ years) engineering experience with C# or a comparable language (Java, Go); SQL familiarity expected. Python experience is a plus. Our stack is primarily C#, and we find that senior engineers from adjacent languages ramp quickly.
- A track record of designing and shipping production API products: contract design, versioning, documentation, and partner-facing support
- Demonstrated ability to own a technical domain end-to-end: from architecture through implementation, testing, and documentation
- Experience working collaboratively with other engineers and leads: you can hold strong opinions on your domain while building consensus across team boundaries
- Experience working directly with external engineering partners on integrations: navigating constraints, communicating tradeoffs, and building trust through technical credibility
- Fluent in enterprise SaaS concepts: multi-tenancy, event-driven architecture, data pipelines
- Comfortable making cloud infrastructure decisions: when to reach for serverless, containers, or managed services, and the tradeoffs each brings.
Bonus Points
- Experience with search and retrieval systems (OpenSearch or Elasticsearch) and the data modeling decisions that make them fast and reliable at scale
- Experience in or adjacent to regulated industries (energy, finance, healthcare, or legal/compliance)
- Background in data platform or marketplace products where external developer or partner adoption was a key success metric
- Experience building or maintaining developer portals, SDKs, or open-source integrations
- Prior involvement in a DevRel or technical partnership function
